talent development programme

The British Athletics Para Talent Development Programme has been established to support athletes graduating from the Event Academy programme and prepare them for potential selection into the World Class Podium and Podium Potential programmes.
The programme invites selected athletes and their coaches to three fully funded overnight camps per year at the British Athletics High Performance Centre in Loughborough over the winter season.
Each athlete can be included in the Talent Development Squad for up to two years with annual selection. On occasion, athletes will be offered a third year based on their development needs and progression.

The weekends offer the experience of working in a team environment in readiness for future British team selection, where needs analysis can be carried out which will feed into and support individual development and care plans for every squad athlete.
Coaches have the opportunity to work alongside like-minded event specialists and access a forum of coaches for mentored support in line with their own development in the sport. During these camps, athletes and coaches will have access to:
• Event specific technical sessions
• Physio screening
• Strength & Conditioning sessions and workshops
• Nutrition workshops
• Sports Psychology workshops
• International/Paralympic athlete Q&A workshops
• Programme planning advise (coaches)

In addition, a parent and guardian workshop is held on the first morning of the first squad weekend, aimed at supporting and providing information for the athletes’ wider support network, in order for them to gain an understanding of the athlete journey to world class level and expectations for the coming years.

Selection for the Talent Development Squad is subject to extensive performance data collection of British and World rankings and is based on the following criteria:
• Current British ranking
• Current World ranking
• Percentage distance away from World Medal achievement
• Realistic potential ability to reach Podium Potential Squad within two years
• Engagement with Event Academy Squad
