UK Athletics has announced a major boost ahead of next year’s World Championships, with a third outdoor grand prix meeting scheduled to take place in Glasgow next summer.

The event, to be called the Norwich Union Classic, will be the first international grand prix athletics meeting in Scotland for 13 years and means the UK will stage three outdoor grand prix events during the 2007 season.

The grand prix format will replace the international match, which has been held in Glasgow and Birmingham in recent years.

The exact nature of the programme will soon be finalised, and it is anticipated that it will be based around a series of truly world-class races and field events, featuring the very best athletes in the world, and additional events, specifically designed to help Britain’s future medal hopefuls.

The rest of the meeting, which takes place at Scotstoun Stadium on Sunday 3 June, will also include Paralympic events and "themed" 2012 disciplines.

Adam Walker, UK Athletics deputy chief executive, said: "This new event is exciting for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is an additional grand prix for the UK, taking our total to three and underlining the UK Athletics’ series of major meetings as the best in the world.

"Clearly the international match was a hugely popular and successful format, but the four-team structure inevitably restricted which athletes were able to compete.

"A grand prix allows us to take our pick of the very best athletes, whichever country they may come from.

"What is equally exciting is the specific content of the Glasgow meeting, which will be a strong mixture of world-class competition and events designed to assist Britain’s aspiring medal hopefuls."

Glasgow will also stage UK Athletics’ opening event of the indoor season, the Norwich Union International on Saturday 27 January, which maintains the traditional five team format.

The presence of some of the world’s best athletes in Glasgow on two occasions during the year is expected to bolster the city’s hopes of being awarded the 2014 Commonwealth Games when the decision is taken in November of next year.

In more good news for the sport, the rising number of British athletes participating in the national trials has resulted in an extension to the Norwich Union World Trials & Championships, which are scheduled to take place in Manchester over three days instead of two.

World class athletics also returns to Sheffield as the city stages both the Norwich Union European Indoor Trials and UK Championships in February, and the Norwich Union British Grand Prix in July.

And London will again play host as the cream of the world’s athletes fine tune their preparations for the World Championships in Japan.

The prestigious Norwich Union London Grand Prix will take place at Crystal Palace on Friday 3 August, three weeks before the World Championships in Osaka.
