Liz Yelling (Bedford and County AC) bounced back bravely from the lowest point of her athletics life to clock 2:31:39 in the ING Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday 15 October – only three weeks after injuries forced her to drop out of the Berlin Marathon.

Despite having needed physiotherapy treatment three times a week to repair her Berlin pains, she covered the Netherlands course 40 seconds more quickly than when she won the Commonwealth Games bronze medal in Melbourne in March.

It reinforced her ranking of second in the UK this year to Mara Yamauchi (Harrow AC), who clocked 2:25:13 in the Flora London Marathon in April, and took her closer to her PB of 2:30:58 in Berlin three years ago.

Yelling said: “It was OK. I went through halfway in 74 minutes, got blisters at 30km but ran hard for the last 5km. It was better than Berlin and there’s more to come.”

Rose Cheruiyot won the race in a time of 2:28:26, 25 seconds ahead of fellow Kenyan Helen Lushanyang with Ethiopia´s Leila Aman third in 2:29:32.

Debutant Solomon Bushendich in a thrilling finish won the men's race in 2:08:52.
