Mara Yamauchi (Harrow AC), the Commonwealth Games 10,000m bronze medallist who led home the UK contingent at this year’s Flora London Marathon, will head the Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team at the IAAF World Road Running Championships to be staged in Debrecen, Hungary, on Sunday 8 October.

Yamauchi, the only ever-present in Norwich Union GB endurance teams on the road, track and country over the last two years, was named by the UK Athletics selectors today along with Natalie Harvey (South London Harriers), Wendy Jones (Cirencester) and Susan Partridge (City of Glasgow AC).

Partridge and Harvey earned their places by finishing seventh and ninth at yesterday’s Fresh n Lo Great Scottish Half Marathon in Glasgow, the official Trial. Liz Yelling (Bedford and County AC), who finished second in Glasgow, declined selection because she is racing the Berlin Marathon on 24 September. Jones’ selection is subject to her proving her fitness in the next couple of weeks.

No men have been selected. UKA Senior Co-ordinator for Endurance Spencer Barden explained: “Nobody achieved the individual qualifying time in Glasgow. Tomas Abyu was the only athlete to have achieved the team time this year. With a number of key athletes making themselves unavailable, we were unable to justify the selection of a men’s team.”
