UK Athletics Jumps Conference Preview

More than 60 coaches have accredited for the UK Athletics Jumps Conference at Brunel University, West London, on Sunday 8 October (9.30am to 5pm)!


The day has been arranged into high jump, pole vault and horizontal jumps segments so that the specific interests of Level 3 and Level 4 coaches are covered by key speakers 1996 former Olympic high jump bronze medallist Steve Smith plus successful coaches Fayyaz Ahmed, John Crotty, Denis Doyle, Phil Graham-Smith, Terry Lomax, Peter Stanley, Peter Sutcliffe and Dave Young.


It takes place a day after the UK Athletics Generic Athlete Components Conferences for Level 3 and Level 4 coaches being organised at Brunel University, West Londom on Saturday 7 October.


The course fee is £10 for one day or £15 for both days and Michelle Dunkley, the former international high jumper who is now the UKA Senior Coordinator – Jumps and Throws, says: “At each of the event conferences, there will be an explanation of the importance of the five rings in athlete development as well as an outline of the UK Event programme – how athletes are selected and what the programme includes.”


For high jump coaches, Terry Lomax will provide the intro to the UK structure; Fayyaz Ahmed will talk about ‘General Conditioning to Plyometrics to Specific Jumping’ with the help of athletes including current UK No.1 Julie Crane; Denis Doyle entitles his post-lunch contribution ‘A matter of degree’; Steve Smith will deal with mental preparation before and during competition in a talk entitled ‘The Winning Edge’ and the day will end with an open panel discussion involving the UKA Event Management Group.


For pole vault coaches, Peter Sutcliffe will provide the introduction to the UK structure and lead a session entitled ‘Energy Transfer in Pole Vault’; Dave Young will deal with the ‘Technical model’; Peter Stanley and John Crotty will cover plyometrics training; and there will be a meeting with the English Regions / Celtic Nations coaches as well as an open panel with the Event Management Group.


For long jump and triple jump coaches, John Crotty and Peter Stanley will provide the introduction to the UK structure and lead the session on plyometrics training; there will be sessions dealing specifically with ‘technique’ and ‘the run-up’; Peter Stanley will detail ‘Programming and Competition Preparation’; Phil Graham-Smith will deal with ‘Biomechanical Testing’; and the day will end with an open panel with the Event Management Group.
