Lee McConnell
UK Athletics has announced the appointment of a Performance / Talent Development Manager for Scotland.

The role, which has been transferred across from the Scottish Institute of Sport will continue to be fulfilled by former Great Britain and Scotland sprinter Aileen McGillivary who joined the institute back in 2000 employed as High Performance Manager.

The position – which sees her fulfil her duties working alongside Scottish Athletics - combines the duties of two positions (Performance Manager and Talent Development Manager) introduced by UK Athletics Performance Director Dave Collins as part of the process to create a seamless performance pathway throughout the UK.

McGillivary will continue to work in a supporting role for coach-athlete pairs in the region and ensuring a continuity of service for Scotland’s elite performers.

McGillivary said:

"It is exciting to be part of the support network around the World Class Pathway throughout the UK on behalf of UK Athletics and I am looking forward to starting the role as Performance/Talent Development Manager.  The role is similar to the one I performed whilst working for the Scottish Institute of Sport and this puts me in an ideal position to be able to continue some of the good work that has already been put in place.  I am also looking forward to working with the team at scottishathletics; together helping produce athletes who will go on to be successful on World Class Programmes."

Geoff Wightman, Chief Executive of Scottish Athletics said:

"The countdown to 2012 and, hopefully, Glasgow 2014 is so important for the future of athletics in Scotland. We welcome the appointment of Aileen as Performance Manager for UKA and working with the team here at scottishathletics. This is an opportunity for the sport to get momentum behind performance and make a strong connection between those athletes at the top of the pyramid on UKA programmes and those working their way through on Scottish programmes. We will do everything we possibly can to create an environment in which coach-athlete pairings can thrive."

Dave Collins, Performance Director for UK Athletics

"Building from a reputation as a doughty competitor, Aileen has developed into an extremely effective Performance Manager. My conversations with coaches and athletes have positively reflected  the role Aileen has played  - and she proved a strong choice to continue her role and responsibility albeit under a different organisation. Whilst employed by UKA she will work closely with Scottish athletics providing the bridge for developing athletes moving onto the World Class Performance plan."

Rodger Harkins, coach to Commonwealth 400m hurdles bronze medallist Lee McConnell has welcomed the appointment of McGillivary by UK Athletics:

“Aileen is very proficient in her job – she’s possibly the best person that we have worked with in the Scottish Institute of Sport. Perhaps as a former athlete she has a greater understanding of what needs to be put in place, but Lee and I have worked well with her for a couple of years.

“It is good that the role will transfer across smoothly and we’re glad that we can maintain that continuity working with Aileen.”
