Alistair Brownlee (Bingley Harriers), who has made his name in athletics on the fells and by winning this year’s English Schools’ Senior Boys’ Cross Country title, is now the World Junior Triathlon Champion. The Bradford Grammar School starlet struck Gold at the World Triathlon Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland. He exited the swim in the leading pack, positioned himself well during the cycling leg and established a five seconds lead over the eventual runner up, Alexander Brunhankov (Russia) by the halfway point of the 5km run – and went on to win in emphatic style.

The triumph comes after Brownlee enjoyed a successful winter. He finished fourth in the Junior Men’s race at the English National Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill, behind Champion Andy Vernon (Aldershot, Farnham and District), Silver medallist Adam Hickey (Southend AC) and Keith Gerrard (Manx Harriers). Then he won the Senior Boys’ title at the English Schools’ Cross Country Championships at Mansfield.
