Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Liz Yelling will miss the European Championships to concentrate on the Berlin Marathon in September.

Yelling made the decision to pull out of the Norwich Union GB team for the championships which begin in Gothenburg on August 7, after considering her future and deciding to concentrate on her individual career.

"I need to run a fast marathon," insisted the 31-year-old, who made her debut over the distance three years ago with a world-class performance in Berlin and then went on to compete at the 2004 Olympic Games.

Yelling makes no secret of the fact she would like to represent her country again despite being literally disowned by UKA, although she receives some medical assistance.

"But I think I am old enough to make my own decisions," she said after finishing fourth in Sunday's Great Women's race over 10 kilometres in Sunderland.

"If I'm good enough they'll pick me in the future, but for the present I have to make my own decisions," said the Bedford athlete.

Yelling was the first domestic athlete home in the Wearside race where former world 10,000 metres champion Gete Wami won with a powerful display in the closing stages.

In bad conditions Wami clinched victory by 10 seconds ahead of Portugal's Analisa Rosa with her fellow Ethiopian Elfenesh Alemu finishing third.
