Ashia Hansen, the former European and Commonwealth triple jump champion, is planning to make her comeback this summer after being sidelined by injury for the last two years.

Hansen, 34, has been out of action since rupturing a tendon in her left knee at the European Cup in Poland. She is now hoping to qualify for August's European Championships in Gothenburg.

"The European Championships are my goal but I have to set the standard first," said Hansen. "I won't go there just for the trip. I will only go there if I know I can compete."

She added: "The cut-off is at the end of the July, two weeks after the AAAs, so there is time.

"This year is all about dusting off the cobwebs and getting back into shape."

Hansen is eager to return after admitting the thought of retirement during her spell out of action had crossed her mind.

She said: "I wouldn't be human if it didn't. But I love what I do and once I got going again there wasn't really an issue.

"I have had a lot of people asking me how long I am going on for and when I am going to retire and all because of my age."
