More Euro medals for mountain men

The Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team won European Mountain Running Championships medals for the fifth successive year at Malé Svatonovice, Czech Republic, on Sunday 9 July.


The Men’s quartet finished third of the 20 teams over a course that measured 11,160 metres and involved 900 metres of climb in temperatures of 27°C and ever-increasing humidity thanks to a fierce storm that erputed just before their race began. Andi Jones (Salford Harriers) finished seventh in 59 minutes 3seconds; Tim Davies (Mercia) eighth in 59:30; John Brown (Salford) 20th in 61:05; and Andy Norman (Altrincham and District AC) 34th in 62:57.


Team result: 1 Italy 19; 2 France 26; 3 Norwich Union GB 35; 4 Czech 50; 5 Poland 53. The individual medals went to: 1 N Gaiaido (Italy) 57:42; 2 S Selcuk (Turkey) 57:50; 3 J Rancon (France) 57:59.


The Norwich Union GB Women’s Team suffered even more in the oppressive weather than the Men and finished sixth of the 17 teams over 7,740 metres with 600m of climb. Mary Wilkinson (Skipton AC) was 11th in 45:02; Christine Howard (Matlock AC) 27th in 47:39; Victoria Wilkinson (Bingley Harriers) 31st in 48:23; but Natalie White (Bingley Harriers) was unable to finish because of the heat and humidity.


Team result: 1 Italy 18; 2 Czech 20; 3 France 28; 4 Slovenia 52; 5 Germany 64; 6 Great Britain 69. The individual medals went to: 1 A Pitchrova (Czech Rep) 41:28; 2 M Kosovelj (Slovakia) 42:12; 3 V Salvini (Italy) 43:32.
