Commonwealth and European long jump silver-medallist Jade Johnson still to qualify for next month's European Championships, was expecting to undergo a minor operation on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old Londoner, who has struggled to his top form this season, has been suffering from a kidney problem which has worsened over the past three days.

Johnson said: "I have seen several specialists who have all agreed that a small operation is needed. I have been committed to hospital to undergo minor surgery which will hopefully resolve the issue."

She added: "I look forward to getting back into competitive action as soon as possible.

"I still hope to compete at the Norwich Union London Grand Prix and, subject to selection, the European Championships in Gothenburg."

On Tuesday, Johnson - who placed second at last weekend's European trials - was not included in the first wave of selections for the Norwich Union GB side.

"Things don't seem to be working well for her and she has still to make the elite standard," said Dave Collins, UK Athletics performance director.

Johnson it appears, is still planning to do that at the Crystal Palace meeting on July 28, the last opportunity to impress the selectors before the final team announcement.

The 2004 Olympic finalist has attained the required distance demanded by the European Athletics Association and given her medical circumstances, UKA could make an exception to their selection rules.

Johnson who is two centimetres shy of the elite 6.65 metres standard, first revealed she was suffering with her health after losing to Kelly Sotherton in Manchester on Sunday.
