Emma Ania (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers), who is defying a stubborn illness to chase the UKA 100m Elite Standard of 11.30 seconds for the European Championships, clocked 11.64 seconds at the Liege International meeting in Belgium on Wednesday evening, 19 July. There was a slight head wind (-0.5 m/s) for the race, which was won by Vida Anim (Ghana) in 11.38 seconds.

So Ania, who was unable to compete in either the recent SPAR European Cup or the Norwich Union European Trials, still has a season’s best of 11.32 seconds from her race in Salamanca, Spain, on 5 July. It leaves her third in the UK rankings behind Trials winner Joice Maduaka (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies) and Anyika Onuora (Liverpool Harriers), who clocked 11.23 and 11.31 respectively at the Trials.

The other UK athlete at the Belgian meeting, Steve Lewis (Newham and Essex Beagles), finished 10th in the pole vault with 5.21m, well below his 5.50m PB that earned him the Commonwealth Games Bronze medal in Melbourne in March. Danny Ecker (Germany) cleared 5.86m to win the Belgian competition ahead of Olympic Silver medallist Toby Stevenson (USA), who went over 5.81m.
