Norwich Union European Trials winner Tim Benjamin (Belgrave Harriers) continued to prepare promisingly for next month’s European Championships by clocking his fastest time of this summer at the Olympic Meeting in Thessaloniki, Greece, on Monday evening 24 July.

He clocked 45.40 seconds to move to fifth in the current European rankings behind French duo Leslie Djhone (44.91), and Marc Raquil (45.01), UK Junior record holder Martyn Rooney (45.35 at the Commonwealth Games) and Belgium’s Cedric Van Branteghem (45.39 in Heusden on 22 July).

Benjamin had clocked 45.61 in Heusden by going out hard and then hanging on to cross the line in sixth place.

He ran a more controlled race in Thessaloniki and finished so strongly that he finished second, closing on winner Ashley Jamel (USA), who clocked 45.29.

The UK’s other athlete to make the trip to the Greek meeting was Hayley Ovens (Edinburgh Southern Harriers), who finished fifth at the NU European Trials just under the UKA Development Standard for Gothenburg of 4:13.00. She finished eighth in 4:17.01 in a race won by Natalia Panteleyeva (Russia) in 4.04.86.
