UK Athletics have announced that 40 home athletes will be able to compete in a unique Norwich Union Jumps International against the Netherlands to be staged at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre, North London, on Wednesday evening, 21 February. And to encourage the community living around the new arena – in the area that will host London 2012 – to embrace top class athletics, spectators will be given free admission.

The match has been arranged by the UKA Event Management Group to give a ‘spotlight’ competition opportunity to athletes aiming for places in the Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland Teams at all of this summer’s major events – the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan; the SPAR European Under 23 Championships in Debrecen, Hungary; the SPAR European Junior Championships in Hengelo, Netherlands; and the IAAF World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

The match will consist of four athletes from each team in each event, one Senior, one Under 23, one Under 20 and one Under 18. In addition, there will be an opportunity for two GBR guests in each of the jumps.

The team will be named after the Norwich Union European Indoor Trials and UK Championships at the EIS Sheffield on 10-11 February.

The new Lee Valley Athletics Centre looks to be perfectly suited for the fixture. When it hosted the second semi-final in the UK Indoor City Challenge last Sunday, there were lifetime bests by five long jumpers, four triple jumpers and two high jumpers – plus a European Indoor Championships qualifying high jump by Samson Oni.

Athletes wishing to be considered for the Norwich Union GB Team should contact the UK Athletics Senior Coordinator for Jumps, Throws and Combined Events, Michelle Dunkley at mdunkley@ukathletics.org.uk

The meeting will start at 4pm.
