East Region Coaching Conference

England Athletics East Region have announced details of their first regional coaching conference, to be held on Saturday 17th February at Lee Valley High Performance Centre.  


They are bringing together a group of coaches from across the region to meet and exchange ideas and experience workshops with some of the best coaches the country has to offer. Keynote speakers include Danny Crates (Paralympic Champion), Tom McNab (Highly experienced coach, best selling author and Technical Director of Chariots of Fire), Callum Orr (Head of Coaching & Teaching at UK Athletics) & Chris Jones (England East Region Manager).  


All delegates will be provided with lunch and a technical review of the day will be sent on to all who have attended. We will be filming some of the sessions on the day to make them available on DVD soon after the conference. All delegates will receive copies of presentations.

A - Morning 

John Anderson
Planning for Combined Events


John will outline his ideas for planning the training year in decathlon and heptathlon with particular reference to his ideas on periodisation and specificity.  


Wilf Paish
Javelin fundamentals

Wilf will lead a session on Javelin highlighting the need for solid fundamentals


Tom McNab
Triple/Long Jump

Tom will take a practical session concentrating on the technical points of the horizontal jumps


Lloyd Cowan
400m hurdles progressions

Lloyd will take us through his techniques for progressing 400m hurdlers through the age groups.


Mike Leonard
Starting – a practical viewpoint

Mike will lead a practical session on starting with demonstrations from some of his athletes


Malcolm Fenton
Developing the hammer turn

Malcolm will cover progressions in the hammer turn from the basics through to the circle.


Richard Hunt
Disability Athletics in context

Richard Hunt leads a practical session on wheelchair athletics and Danny Crates will discuss his own adaptations and challenges within his training.


Liam Cain
800/1500 competition preparation

Liam gives a theoretical workshop on peaking and the build up to major competitions.

5k/10k Planning

John will outline his training structure for 5k and 10k runners.


Wilf Paish
Shot and Discus in a spin

Wilf covers the similarities and differences between rotational shot and discus and discusses the crucial points within each in this practical session.


Tom McNab
Working with total beginners

Tom leads a practical session with complete beginners covering the basics of athletics.


Lloyd Cowan
Sprint Hurdles

Lloyd leads a practical session on sprint hurdling covering the technical aspects of the event.


Mike Leonard
Countdown to Gold

Mike Leonard reviews Craig Pickering’s final three months leading to winning the European Junior Gold medal, looking at all aspects of his training and competition


Malcolm Fenton
New ideas in Strength and Conditioning

Malcolm will take a practical session on strength and conditioning utilising some unusual equipment and particularly focussing on rotational movement.


Beth Harris
Progressions with intermediate vaulters

Beth Harris will outline some progressions for athletes coming out of the beginner stage towards higher heights.
