UK Athletics are inviting female endurance athletes in the London area to an introductory Steeplechase workshop at Brunel University, West London, on 4 March, starting at 10am.

The workshop is being sponsored by Aqua-Pura as part of UK Athletics’ renowned ‘Women in Athletics’ programme that has encouraged many females to try – and take up – a variety of events.

Women's steeplechase is now included in all the major Championships at both junior and senior level, including the Olympics. Despite a very successful 2006 which included Lizzie Hall (Herts Phoenix) breaking the UK Senior Women's 3000m steeplechase record and Ruth Senior (City of Norwich AC) reaching the World Junior Championships final, there are still not enough UK female athletes participating in the event.

Workshops such as this are therefore part of the event specific development and competition programme designed by UK Athletics aiming to raise the profile of the event. Athletes should be 14 or older and rank in the top 30 in a middle distance event in the Power of 10 London region rankings for last year. Those just below this standard are also encouraged to apply and may be able to attend if places are available.

"Ruth Senior is one of the female athletes who has benefited from attending a previous Aqua-Pura steeplechase workshop such as this,” says Stella Bandu, Coordinator of both the Aqua-Pura Women's Steeplechase and England Athletics London Region Endurance Events.

“It has been fantastic to watch the progress Ruth has subsequently made both in steeplechase and flat distances. I hope attending next month’s workshop will inspire a few more athletes to follow in her footsteps."

The main purpose of the day is to broaden opportunities for females in the steeplechase. The event will follow Aqua Pura Women’s Steeplechase Development being incorporated into the South East Regional Squad Day at St Mary’s University Twickenham, home of the UKA Endurance Performance Centre, on Sunday 18 February.

Several teenagers of County Champion standard in flat events were so enthused by a steeplechase session at the Squad Day in December that they are returning this Sunday for more technical encouragement from coach Geoff Watkin, Sports Psychology advice from Nicki Heath and Core stability and massage with Nick Anderson.

All coaches are welcome to attend even if they do not have an athlete attending the workshop. For further information and to book your place on 4 March, contact Stella Bandu on 07960 371958 or email StellaAAC@aol.com
