Record-breaking numbers attended the first of two weeks of DASH Athletics Norwich Union Star:track at Hazel Grove Recreation Centre, Stockport, this week, earning points for their Norwich Union shine:awards.

There were some excellent performances among the seven groups, with around 45 of the 61 athletes achieving a Gold shine:award. Despite very wet weather early in the week, the team of eight young coaches guided the groups through runs, jumps and throws, with the five-minute run and the hammer throw proving particularly popular. The star:track course once again proved an excellent tool for spotting and recruiting new talent to athletics, with several children signing up already to join DASH Athletics. On the final day, Head Coach Geoff Barratt congratulated the children, and the coaches presented their certificates. Each athlete was also given a chocolate bar, but not before they had a piece of fruit!

To celebrate a new sponsorship from Warburtons Bread, who are investing over £2000 in DASH for sportshall athletics reversaboards and team kit, several athletes were presented with loaves of Warburtons Bread. There were also two visits from Greater Manchester Athletics Development Officer, Alice Watson.

The final day was devoted to a "Mini European Championships" to draw the athletes’ attention to next week's action in Gothenburg. The children were split up into eight teams, with Great Britain defeating France in the final event, the 4x200m which was held on the 200m track, one of three grass tracks at the Hazel Grove venue. DASH Athletics Junior Development Coordinator Joe Frost took time out to explain to the children all of the possible opportunities available to them in athletics, and each child was encouraged to come back again or join the DASH Athletics Team.

Congratulations to everyone who took part, and well done to all the coaches who have worked extremely hard to make all six of this year's schemes a success. There is still one more week to go, with another star:track course at Hazel Grove next week.
