Supported by the local councils, Students’ Union and local club DASH Athletics, Manchester Metropolitan University is launching its athletics club this week, in the lead up to the new academic year. The move was sparked by MMU student and DASH Athletics Development Coordinator Joe Frost, who was surprised to find that one of Europe's largest universities was without an athletics club. After lengthy planning involving Manchester City Council athletics chiefs and Students’ Union staff, use of the top class facilities at the Manchester Regional Athletics Arena was secured. 'The fact that Manchester is the only high-performance centre in the UK not used regularly by a university suggested to us that we had an opportunity too good to miss,' said Frost. 'There is no reason why Manchester cannot go on to become a hub of student athletics in the same way as other universities such as Loughborough, Cardiff, St Mary’s and Brunel have done.' There has already been a large degree of interest from existing students, and staff are hopeful of attracting a large number of freshers to the club in September. The timing could not be better, with the London Olympics coming up. 'We are optimistic about the future of this initiative,' added Frost. 'Our long-term goal is to compete with the top seven or eight Universities in the country.'

The support of DASH Athletics will be key in the implementation of the coaching programme and administration of the club, as will the assistance with cross country and road running offered by Salford Harriers.
