European Cross 2011

19 September 2012

Following some outstanding performances by British endurance athletes throughout the summer in the IAAF World Junior Championships and over the course of the Olympics, the focus now returns to the cross country season and the selection policies have now been published online for the following events:

  • 19th Spar European Cross Country Championships in Budapest, Hungary (9 December 2012)
  • BUPA Great Edinburgh Cross Country International Challenge, Edinburgh, Scotland (5 January 2013)

  • 40th IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland (24 March 2013)

Key points to note include:

European Cross: for the first time the focus will be entirely on the trial race with the first six across the line being selected for junior and under-23 athletes. In the senior race the first five will be selected with a further place added at the selectors’ discretion.

World Cross: selection will be the first four across the line at the trial providing the athletes meet the selection criteria, with remaining places being filled in line with the selection criteria.

In addition to the Aviva GB & NI Team events, the domestic UK fixtures kick off with the McCain Cross Country Challenge in Bristol on Sunday 28 October, followed by the McCain Liverpool Cross Challenge – incorporating the European Cross Country Trials - on Saturday 24 November, Antrim on 12 January, Cardiff on 20January and the McCain Cross Challenge Final - incorporating the Inter Counties and World Cross Trials - in Birmingham on 9 March 2012.

Athletes and coaches are encouraged to make sure they read the selection policies prior to the cross season starting.
