Youth Advisory Group

09 December 2010

The application deadline for UKA’s Youth Advisory Group (YAG) is next Wednesday (15 December), so interested individuals are encouraged to submit their applications now to avoid missing out.

The YAG will be created to work with UKA – as part of UKA’s commitment to developing a vibrant, attractive and sustainable sport that reflects the needs of all participants through to London 2012 and beyond – to shape the future direction of the sport.

The YAG will initially work closely with UKA staff to provide guidance on projects related to all sectors of the sport, which will contribute to an improved service for young people within athletics, regardless of their role or level of involvement.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Input into the planning and coordination of the Young Leaders Camp and Young Leaders Programme

  • Provide critical feedback on any resources produced by UKA that will be accessed by young people

  • Provide feedback regarding the development of the UKA recruitment and retention project for young technical officials

  • Help to identify event volunteering opportunities and raise their profile amongst young volunteers

  • Support the creation and production of youth specific athletics media

  • Assist with planning and delivery of athletics specific youth volunteering events

Stuart Attwell (UKA Senior Co-ordinator – Competitions) said: “By creating the YAG, we hope to make the most of the experience, knowledge and understanding that these talented young people have, to help our future projects meet their needs more effectively. The group will act as an influential voice for all young people within athletics, and will be used to ensure that we can respond more effectively to issues that they face. In the countdown to 2012 and through to Glasgow 2014 and beyond there will be many exciting opportunities and we feel passionately that young people should have a say in how we take the sport forward, and what we try to achieve.”

There is less than one week to go until the application process closes. Specific qualifications are not required, but applicants must be committed, well organised, creative, a team player, and aged between 16 and 25.

“It doesn’t matter what an applicant’s background is, where they come from, or how they are involved in athletics,” adds Attwell. “To get the maximum benefit from the group, we want to receive applications from as wide a range of people as possible and while you might not think you’re a suitable candidate you might know young people within your athletics club or Athletics Network who may jump at the chance to get involved in this exciting opportunity.”

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 15th December. Once the applications have been reviewed all applicants will be contacted to let them know if they have been shortlisted and what the next steps are.
