Leaders Academies

British Athletics are currently working with England Athletics on the development of Leaders Academies. For details about the Leaders Academy programme, and your local Athletics Network, email us on yag@britishathletics.org.uk.

What is a Leaders Academy?

A Leaders Academy is a group of young people (aged 14-25) who meet regularly and work together to develop a wide range of athletics leadership skills.

The Academy is made up of between 10 and 20 young people, who come together on a local basis, usually in conjunction with the local Athletics Network.

How often does the Leaders Academy meet?

The Leaders Academies run a range of sessions, covering coaching, officiating and event organisation. This is a rolling programme, which is usually delivered over a period of 9 – 18 months. Meetings are usually held once every 6-8 weeks.

How are Academy members selected?

Members are usually selected from clubs in the local Athletics Network. They should have an existing interest in leadership and volunteering, and should be actively involved with their clubs. The Leaders Academy is not just restricted to coaches; therefore, officials and other volunteers should be encouraged to join.

What benefits are available to the young people involved with the Leaders Academy?

The Leaders Academy can provide a number of benefits, including education and development, access to volunteer opportunities, (including major events), and an enhanced CV. The programme enables the young people to direct their own learning, which allows them to take control of their future involvement in the sport.
