2013 Selection Policies Update
20 December 2012
UK Athletics today announced the 2013 selection policies for the European Indoors Championships, European Team Championships and Age Group Championships.
European Indoor Championships – 1-3 March, Gothenburg
As European Athletics don’t produce qualification standards for this event, UK Athletics have created a set of “UKA Standards” based on the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships standards and performances that indicate the ability to finish in the top six in Gothenburg.
The first and second athletes at the British Athletics European Trials in Sheffield on 9-10 February 2013 will be automatically selected for the same event at the European Indoor Championships provided that they hold a valid UKA qualification standard in that event.
Selection for the European Indoors will be made on Monday 18 February with the GB & NI team being announced on Tuesday 19 February.
A full list of the UKA qualification standards are available in the European Indoor Championships Selection Policy.
European Team Championships – 22-23 June, Gateshead
It is UKA’s aim to win the European Team Championships when it returns to Gateshead in June 2013. The selectors will pick the strongest possible team, with one athlete selected per event – men and women – and a squad of up to six athletes in each relay.
The team will be selected on Monday 10 June 2013 and will be announced on Tuesday 11 June 2013.
A full list of events is available in the European Team Championships Selection Policy.

Age Group Championships
2013 European U23 Championships – 11-14 July 2013, Finland
2013 European U20 Championships – 18-21 July, Italy
2013 World U18 Championships – 10-14 July, Ukraine
GB and NI Under 20 Internationals – 19 May, Loughborough and 29-30 June, Mannheim
UKA will only select an athlete for one of the three age group Championships and the selection panel will assume that athletes wish to compete in their own Championship i.e. the youngest age group that they are eligible for.
Any athlete wishing to be considered for a higher age group event should contact their age group Team Leader before the U23/U20 European Trials (15/16 June, Bedford).
In 2013, UKA will not be sending teams to the European Youth Olympic Festival or the World University Games.
European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) clashes with the World U18 and as a result European Athletics has reduced the age group of the EYOF to U17 for one year (it is normally an U18 event).
UKA have therefore decided not send a team to the EYOF as we believe that only the most exceptional U18 athletes benefit from competing in global championships; it is less likely that an U17 championships will be beneficial in the long term and the World U18 Championships serves the needs of exceptional athletes better than an U17 EYOF.
UKA have decided not to send a team to the 2013 World University Games (WUGS) as it clashes with the WU18s, EU23s and EU20s and UKA consider these more appropriate competitions for these age groups. UKA will take a decision on the 2015 WUGs when we have seen the competition calendar for that year.
Further details on Age Group selection are available in the Age Group Championships and International Selection Policy.
