Two teams of legendary athletes will be battling it out against each other in a Commonwealth Vs European 5,000m Champions challenge at this year’s BUPA Great North Run on 1 October.

Not only will the two teams of veteran Gold medallists be racing to see who can cross the finish line first, but they will also be competing to raise the most money for the Athletics Foundation.

Running for the Commonwealth team is Chris Chataway, who achieved Gold in 1954 and Dave Moorcroft, who won in 1982. The European Championship team includes Jack Buckner who took Gold in 1986, and Bruce Tulloh who also clinched first place in 1962.

Both teams will be competing under the watchful eye of non-running captain and Great North Run founder Brendan Foster, also an Olympic Bronze and Commonwealth Gold medallist.

Dave Moorcroft, Chief Executive of UK Athletics, said: “It’s going to be a tough competition. To be honest, I’ll be happy just to get to the finish line and have a horrible feeling that Jack and Bruce will have the edge over us!”

The Athletics Foundation has been created to encourage participation in athletics and enable the next generation of young British athletes to reach their maximum potential. It provides support to individuals to help them overcome challenges in order to succeed and achieve their dreams.

Chris Chataway, Chairman of the Athletics Foundation, added: “My wife is right of course - all this is utterly ridiculous for somebody of my age! But I do like the idea, however improbable, of partnering Dave Moorcroft in a great win.

“I’m very keen to drum up support for the Athletics Foundation, which does a lot for young athletes. We urge as many people as possible to make a donation, no matter how small, to either team."
