Amir Williamson

Under 20 Amir Williamson (pictured, Blackheath and Bromley) and Master Malcolm Fenton (City of Norwich AC) set UK weight throwing bests at Mayesbrook Park on Sunday 17 September.

Williamson’s effort of 22.78m beat the previous best of 22.35m, set last December by Alex Smith (Sale Harriers Manchester), who is the only hammer thrower ahead of Williamson in this summer’s UK Under 20 Men’s rankings.

Williamson had not intended competing and did so in shoes and shorts borrowed from Fenton, who went on to set a UK Masters (M50) record of 19.04m … "wearing my own shorts and shoes!"

Fenton, whose hammer best of 62.42m dates back to 1982, is now wondering if his is the first instance of a UK Athletics National Event Coordinator setting a record? Answers, please, to tfrecknall@hotmail.com

And stand by for more improvements. For Fenton, the National Event Coordinator for men’s hammer, says: “I am currently pushing for more Weight Throw events over the UK in the coming months.”
