Kelly Sotherton (Birchfield Harriers) finished second to the World Student Games Champion Nataliya Dobrynska (Ukraine) in the last major heptathlon competition of the summer in Talence, France, on 16 and 17 September.

 

Britain’s Olympic Bronze medallist scored 6186 points – 139 fewer than when she finished fifth at last year’s World Championships and 104 fewer than when she finished seventh at last month’s European Championships in

Gothenburg.

 

She ran the 100m hurdles in 13.42 seconds (for 1062 points), high jumped 1.78m (953 points), put the shot 13.82m (782), ran 200m in 23.70 seconds (986), long jumped 6.48m (1001), threw the javelin 31.67m (508) and ran 800m in 2:14.92 (894). Dobrynska, who finished one place higher than Sotherton at the Europeans, totalled 6256.

 

Britain’s other competitor, Julie Hollman (Belgrave Harriers) finished 12th with 5832. She clocked 13.97 seconds (983 points) in the 100m hurdles, high jumped 1.69m (842), put the shot 12.32m (682), sprinted 200m in 24.70 (892), long jumped 6.27m (934), threw the javelin 41.27m (692) and ran 800m in 2:21.24.
