Richard Goodman takes victory and McCain XC series title

In addition to their individual race victories in Saturday’s McCain UK Cross Challenge Final - which included the IAAF World Cross Country Trials at senior and under-20 level and the UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships - Richard Goodman (Shaftesbury Barnet), Ross Matheson (Lasswade AAC) and Katie Rowe (Guernsey) all picked up prizes for their winning efforts in the overall McCain UK Cross Challenge series.

Both Goodman and Matheson were unbeaten in their respective age groups throughout the series, while Rowe consistently finished within the top two, but all three were big winners in Cofton Park, Goodman taking home a £600 cheque while Matheson and Rowe received sports vouchers to the value of £300.

Across the other age groups, the McCain UK Cross Challenge winners were:

Senior men: Andy Vernon (AFD); runner-up in the senior men’s race on Saturday but consistently impressive throughout the series with one victory – Cardiff

Senior women: Jess Sparke (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies); European Cross Country under-23 bronze medallist, eighth in Birmingham

Junior women: Kate Avery (Shildon); European Cross Country under-20 bronze medallist; seventh in Birmingham

Under-17 women: Melissa Courtney (Poole AC); fourth in Birmingham but victorious in the Cardiff leg of the McCain UK Cross Challenge

Under-15 boys: Benedict Westhenry (Weymouth St Pauls); finished 20th in Birmingham but placed consistently well in the other McCain races, with third place finishes in Gateshead and Liverpool and a runners-up spot in Cardiff

Under-15 girls: Abbie Hetheringon (Carlisle Aspatria); impressive winner in Liverpool (round two of the series) following up a second place finish in the series opening in Gateshead. Finished 12th in Birmingham

Under-13 boys: Jack Crabtree (East Cheshire); winner of the Cardiff race after finishing third in Gateshead and second in Liverpool.  Concluded his McCain UK Cross Challenge efforts with a fourth place finish in Birmingham.
