10 June 2009

The inaugural Super8 event will take place in Cardiff on Wednesday night with city teams lining up to battle for the first ever title.

Athletes from Glasgow, Newcastle, Sheffield, Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham, London North and London South will be competing for both city pride and to stake their claim on a place in the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team for the European Team Championships.

With a number of top athletes signed up including Team GB athletes who competed at the Olympic Games, the high quality fields will make for an exciting evening at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium.

Key battles in tonight’s fixture include:
Sprints

The men’s 100m will see Aviva GB team mates Craig Pickering (Lon N) and Christian Malcolm (Card) line up alongside Glasgow’s Nick Smith and this season’s 100m breakthrough athlete Jeffrey Lawal Balogun (Lon S); whilst Chris Baillie (Glas) and Gianni Frankis (Lon N) will make the men’s 110m hurdles a fascinating spectacle.

Kadi Ann Thomas (Lon N) and Elaine O Neill (Lon S) should make the women’s 100m an interesting affair with the rival London sides hoping to get top points from the shortest sprint. Vicki Barr (Newcastle), Gemma Nicol (Glas) and Jenny Meadows (Manc) will all be vying for 400m supremacy this evening whilst Tasha Danvers (Lon N) Zara Hohn (Shef) and Gemma Bennett (Lon N) line up in the 100m hurdles.

Distance

Sam Ellis (Shef), Richard Hill (Birm) and Joe Thomas (Card) will hope the 800m battle will drive them to fast times, and the 1500m line up including Dave Forrester (Manc), Chris Parr (Newc) Jermaine Mays (Lon S) and Stephen Davies (Card) will ensure there is some close competition over the metric mile.

The women’s 800m race looks to be the pick of the distance crop with GB internationals Amanda Pritchard (Wales), Susan Scott (Glas), plus Vicky Griffiths (Man) and Emma Jackson (Shef) all expected to toe the start line. Charlene Thomas (Shef) looks favourite to take the 1500m race, after recently achieving an A standard for the World Championships. She’ll face competition from Laura Weightman (Newc) and former GB & NI 800m representative Karen Harewood (Birm).

Throws

The men’s javelin features the UK’s top three throwers in an exciting line up with Mervyn Luckwell (Lon N), James Campbell (Glas) and Chris Hughff (Shef) all vying for recognition in what has proved a close event domestically in 2009.

Jumps

The men’s high jump will pit the performances of Robbie Grabarz (Lon N), Samson Oni (Lon S), Tom Parsons (Birm) and Rob Mitchell (Card) in a jump off for a European Teams Cup place. Whilst in-form Chris Tomlinson (Newc)will face Jonathan Moore (Lon N) – a late replacement for Greg Rutherford who has withdrawn. In the women’s  event Phyllis Agbo (Lon N), Amy Woodman (Lon S) and Louise Hazel (Birm) will compete with Agbo looking favourite following a PB-laced start to the season.
