A first British victory by Christian Malcolm on the second day of the SPAR European Cup in Malaga provided the vital points which finally moved the Norwich Union Great Britain men's side out of the relegation battle.

The former world junior champion flew to the fastest 200 metres time by a European this year of 20.29 seconds, with a confident, impressive display.

Malcolm, whose career has been hindered by persistent injuries since emerging as the world's top junior eight years ago, powered off the final bend with only Ronald Pognon for company.

The Frenchman, who won the 100m title the previous evening ahead of Dwain Chambers, had no answer when the 27-year-old Welshman switched into top gear in the last 20 metres.

Malcolm's winning performance could not have come at a better time, lifting the side from mid-table to third place behind Russia and France after 17 of the 20 events.
