Campbell: Future bright for Abeyie

Olympic gold medallist Darren Campbell has tipped vastly-improved Tim Abeyie as the likeliest British sprinter to succeed on the world stage.

Campbell believes he can assist his 23-year-old training partner to make it to the top - just as he did under the tutelage of former Olympic champion Linford Christie.

"I was fortunate enough to learn my trade from Linford, so if I can play a small part in the career of the next British sprinter who goes out there and is successful at the major championships, that will be very satisfying," said Campbell. "With Tim I really do believe that you are looking at the next big one."

He added: "He is in his first season of fully listening and fully understanding stuff. I've always said there are no short cuts to success - it took me 20 years to become Olympic champion."

Cardiff student Abeyie has come on in leaps and bounds this year and is a genuine challenger for a 100m or 200m place at next month's European Championships.

He values Campbell's advice - although he intends to show his Mancunian mentor no mercy when they clash at the Norwich Union trials in Manchester this weekend.

"Darren's experience is so valuable when you go into a major event like this," said Abeyie, a 200m semi-finalist in last summer's trials.

"But this weekend we are both going for that place in the British team - that's just part of life."
