Mo Farah

UK Athletics has today announced that six athletes have been pre-selected for the World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, Kenya on the 24th March.

The selections, following the European Cross Country Championships have been made to ensure the athletes concerned have optimum preparation time in order to ensure they can meet the challenge of the 2007 Kenyan-staged event.

European Cross Country Champion Mo Farah is selected for the men’s team, which this year returns to its original format of one long course race following the demise of the short course option.

Jo Pavey and Hayley Yelling will fly the flag in the senior women’s race following strong European Cross performances.

Finally, Junior Women’s European Cross Country champion Stephanie Twell leads a talented threesome of herself, Emily Pidgeon and Sian Edwards towards the championships as they seek to match the strength of their performances from Italy before Christmas.

Spencer Barden, UK Athletics Senior Coordinator for Endurance said: “Even with the benefit of the pre championships preparation camp in South Africa, it is clear that these pre-selections will serve to assist these athletes further with their preparations for Mombasa.

“Those selected are all capable of finishing in high positions at the World Cross Country and enabling them to prepare in this way gives the Norwich Union GB team the best possible chance of making the transition from European Cross Country success to making a real impact against the much tougher challenge of world class opposition they will face in Mombasa.”

The World Trials for Senior Men and Women are being staged within the BUSA Championships at the University of Bath on Saturday 3 February.

Senior athletes who wish to compete at the World Cross Country trials but are not eligible to represent a university are reminded that they only have until Thursday 11 January to enter. For further information please read entry guidelines issued on the UK Athletics Website before Christmas

Athletes who qualify for the Norwich Union GB team for the World Cross Country will be expected to attend the warm weather training camp in Durban, South Africa in order to prepare for the extreme weather conditions expected at the championship.
