Young Leaders Camp 2009

16 August 2010

The class of 2010 checked into Bradfield College this weekend for the Third Young Leaders Camp, an initiative which brings together leaders aged 16-19 from the sports of Athletics, Gymnastics and Netball.

With 150 young people enrolled for the four day camp, members have been divided into eight teams, each under the banner of a previous Olympic Host City (Tokyo, Rome, Montreal, Moscow, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Sydney and Athens), which ties into the camp’s recently award status as “Inspired by London 2012.”

On the first day of this camp, leaders were challenged with a number of team building activities, fun packed games energetic exercises, as well as devising a three minute showcase of each team’s talent for the “Leader’s Camp Got Talent” show scheduled for later in the week.

The camp aims to give graduate young leaders the skills to take back to the local clubs and networks, as coaches, officials, volunteers as well as event and club administrators.

Some of the young leaders reflected on day one of the camp;

“It’s only the first day, I’m having a great time, and I’ve already learnt some great games that I can take back to the youth section of my club.”

“I’m getting my A Levels on Thursday, and it’s a nice distraction from thinking about it, as well as having some fun and pick up a few ideas, my team seem really nice, and we’re really looking forward to winning Leader’s Camp Got Talent”

“I’ve not been involved too long in my club, but I reckon that the things that I am going to pick up and already have will be useful for supporting my club in getting more young people involved in sport”

“I want to get involved in volunteering in the Olympics; I think this will help me be more confident for the challenge”

The Young Leader’s Camp runs until Wednesday 18 August 2010, with teams involved in number of sport-specific and generic leadership activities and workshops involving event management, mentoring, leading coaching sessions, officiating in sport and personal planning and development.
