Hurdler Liz Fairs (pictured) and sprinter Leon Baptiste enjoyed confidence-boosters at an international meeting in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland, on their way to the UK Challenge Final at Manchester on Sunday 27 August.

Fairs (Trafford AC), the reigning UK Challenge Champion and leader of this season’s 400m hurdles standings, won in 58.35 seconds at the Swiss meeting with Anwen Rees (Carmarthen Harriers) second in 60.20.

Baptiste (Enfield and Haringey AC) knocked a tenth of a second off his 100m season’s best to prove he is getting back into the confident mode that enabled him to win the European Junior title in 2003. He clocked 10.35 seconds – indeed, it was initially given as 10.33 – in a heat (wind speed: +1.1) won in 10.28 by Ricardo Williams (Jamaica).

Then Baptiste clocked 10.40 for fourth place in the final, also won by Williams in 10.29.
