UK Challenge 1500m Champion James Thie (Cardiff AAC), who has struggled to shake-off illness problems that have dogged him since the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, enjoyed a victory tonic at the Folksam Grand Prix in Malmo, Sweden, on Tuesday evening 22 August.

He won the 1500m in 3:45.09, out-sprinting Paul Hamblyn (New Zealand), who finished second in 3:45.33 and Lee Merrien (Channel Islands AC), third in 3:45.83.

Richard Buck (Rowntree AC) was third in the 400m in 46.86 seconds two days after racing for Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the Norwich Union International in Birmingham. The Swedish race was won by Matt Scherer (USA) in 46.00 from David Gillick (Ireland), who was second in 46.22.

At a European AA Premium meeting in Linz, Austria, Irie Hill (Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow AC) was foiled in her attempts to end her pole vaulting season on a high. She cleared 3.80m for third place. She then had one failure at 4.00m and two at 4.10m. Sabine Schulte (Germany) cleared 4.20m to win.
