The Company that produced last year’s successful McCain Track and Field Show has been commissioned to produce key programmes building up to the 2012 Paralympic Games.

The magazine style series, produced by Boomerang with the working title ‘Paralympics on 4’, will air on daytime weekend TV from 28 August 2010 for ten weeks and will showcase athletics, the nation’s favourite Olympic and Paralympic sport.

The Saturday lunchtime programmes will be presented by Rick Edwards and Ade Adepitan and will introduce the public to potential ParalympicsGB team members, revealing the personalities behind the athletes as well as providing insight and aiming to educate the public and raise the overall profile of a range of Paralympic sports.

Adepitan will be backed by a team of roving reporters on location including Aviva GB & NI team representative and Beijing Paralympian Nathan Stephens, in addition to former European and Commonwealth 400m gold medallist Iwan Thomas.

Julian Bellamy, Head of Channel 4, said: “We wanted to find ground-breaking, intelligent ways of raising the profile of Britain’s Paralympic athletes and the sports themselves and this will achieve it brilliantly.

“From the very start of this process it was clear that Boomerang shared Channel 4’s vision to produce the most innovative sports coverage showcasing Paralympic sports to millions of viewers.  I’m very proud of these new commissions, and hope this puts down a clear marker for how we intend to over-achieve our ambitions in the run up, and during the London 2012 Paralympic Games.”

Phil Lane, CEO of ParalympicsGB commented:  “This commissioning marks an important first step in our shared ambition to raise the profile of British Paralympic athletes and sports well in advance of the Games in 2012 in order that the whole nation gets behind the team.  Channel 4 is to be congratulated on commissioning such exciting, creative programmes that will have the cut through needed to showcase our exciting sports and incredible athletes.”

The next stage in the commissioning process is to confirm the two ten-part documentary series to run through 2011 and 2012, and these are expected to be commissioned in the next few weeks.

In addition, a 90-minute film with the working title ‘Inside Incredible Athletes’ will launch Channel 4’s Paralympic Games involvement in spectacular fashion this summer. The feature programme, produced by Renegade Pictures, will profile five Paralympic Games hopefuls, taking the athletes away from track and field and film stunning sporting performance sequences against a backdrop of iconic locations around London. More detailed information will follow in due course.
